For Parents/volunteers
Students at Penny Road Elementary visit the school library with their class as a part of their Specials rotation. Kindergarten visits on a four day rotation. Grades 1-5 rotate on a block schedule (5 days in a row) and come every 4 weeks. During our 45-minute class time, students engage in media and technology lessons that help support the North Carolina Information and Technology Skills Essential Standards. Students at every grade level learn about the best examples of children's literature, how to conduct research, evaluate print and digital resources, use the appropriate technology to create projects, and practice ethical digital citizenship.
Students are encouraged to visit the library to check out books any time throughout the school day with their teacher's permission. The media center is also open before school (8:45-9:15) for student check out.
Children who can choose their own books become better readers. As a result, we teach and encourage students to be as self-sufficient as possible in the media center. Starting in 1st grade students are taught to:

All books are due fourteen school days from the date of checkout. Students can bring books to the media center to be renewed.
We never assess fines for late books. However, we do ask that families pay for any lost or damaged books. Before sending in payment for a book you believe to be lost, please make sure your look in some of these common places for lost library books:

- find books of interest to them using a variety of methods (e.g., out online catalog, shelf signs, browsing bins, book displays, etc.)
- find the highest-quality children's literature (e.g., Caldecott, Newberry, and NC Children's Book Award winners)
- reserve books online
- check out their own books
